Symposium 7
Electrochemical Engineering and Technology

Sponsoring Division: Division 5, Electrochemical Process Engineering and Technology

The need for electrochemical engineering arises from electrochemical technological applications such as electrochemical synthesis of chemicals, electrowinning and refining of metals, batteries and fuel cells, sensors, surface modification by electrodeposition and etching, separations and corrosion. Each of them involves the optimization of electrode, electrolyte, separator and other components for low cost and high efficiency, by skillful manipulation of engineering design variables. The optimization processes are based on a broad range of fundamental knowledge (energetics, reaction kinetics, double-layer and interfacial phenomena, conduction, fluid flow, mass transport, and current-distribution and potential-distribution phenomena). Electrochemical engineering involves the investigation and use of such fundamental knowledge to solve practical problems.

Topics include but are not limited to:
- Design, operation, testing and modeling of electrochemical systems
- Organic and inorganic electrosynthesis
- New electrode materials and electrocatalysts in electrochemical engineering and technology
- Energy efficient membranes for electrolytic processes
- Ionic liquids and supercritical fluids, for more efficient processes
- Electrolytic water treatment and purification processes, such as advanced oxidation, electrodialysis, and membrane electrolysis
- Electrochemical sequestration of CO2
- Electrochemical promotion of catalysis
- Presentations dealing with business, economics, environmental or historical aspects of the different processes are also encouraged
